The San Diego Costume Guild brings together costume enthusiasts for the purpose of networking, communication, idea sharing, costume construction support and advice, and sharing of information regarding local events to which a costume may be worn. By doing this, we hope to increase the knowledge and techniques related to costuming, and just have fun. p>

We interact using a Yahoo Group and by email, so there is no cost to anyone for mailings. This is a private Yahoo Group and only open to SDCG members. Please email us at sdcostumers@yahoo.com if you wish to join us. We also have a website with the calendar of events, articles, tips, and suggestions for resource books and movies at www.orgsites.com/ca/sdcg

Our guild has been in existence for about 13 years. We have no dues. We try to do everything without cost, teach each other, and therefore try not to charge for anything we do. Sometimes we have costume workshops where there may be a small charge for materials, and if it's an outside teacher, pay them their fees.

We have a social gathering every other month at The Sizzler on 3755 Murphy Canyon Rd, in San Diego. The date is on the fourth Monday of the even numbered months at 7pm, and is announced two weeks before the date on our Yahoo Group. The dates are also on our calendar, which is sent out periodically on our Yahoo Group.

The following is some information about our members: The San Diego Costume Guild (SDCG) covers all eras. We are not SCA. We have about 160 members, but the core group is around 40. We do everything from Renaissance to 1920s-40s, and have many interested in Steampunk, SciFi & Fantasy. Some of us have our favorites. We have a strong Renaissance group, and will have our encampment at the Ren Faire in Felicita Park, Escondido, in April and Oct/Nov. Look for our banner, "Guild of Costumers" back in the glen. We’re a demonstration guild and we show costumes we've made, and how to make them and accessories. We don't sell anything. Please come visit us!

We sometimes create events ourselves to go to and dress up but go to other events we find that we can wear costumes to. We've been the background on various exhibits at Balboa Park. We've done fashion shows as fundraisers for churches. We go to the Dickens Festival in Riverside and the Scottish Highland Games in Vista every year; we do a Costumed Walkabout at the tri-annual Del Mar Antiques Show, & we have a couple members in the Ladies Civil War Society who do CW with us. And we are gaining those interested in SciFi/Fantasy and Steampunk. Last year we helped with the newly formed Gaslight Gathering Steampunk & Victoriana convention in San Diego. We've gone to tea and movies in costume, and had picnics in Balboa Park & Old Town San Diego. In other words, we look for any excuse to go in costume, no matter what era. Check out our Calendar.

We are strong supporters of the Costume College held each year in Van Nuys, CA, and volunteer to help with it’s running. It's the annual three-day costume convention put on by the Costumers Guild West. We take classes there in all eras and genres of costuming, and just have a great time. It’s held each year around the beginning of August. Costume College

The expertise in our group ranges from "just play dress-up" to theatre costumers & dressers to period correct. Some are beginners and we have various levels of sewing expertise. Some don’t sew at all. (Very few make costumes for sale) We are not "thread counters" or "Costume Nazis". We all seem to compliment each other. If you want to specialize in just one particular era or genre, that’s your choice.
